INVASIVE PLANT MEDICINE: Learning to love the pariahs of the plant world

INVASIVE PLANT MEDICINE: Learning to love the pariahs of the plant world

Maligned by agricultural producers and conservationists alike, invasive plants are plants that have a demonstrated ability to widely proliferate in introduced habitats. Move beyond the venomous passion, ire, intrigue, and speculation to understand their complex history and ecological function within the landscape. Many of these species are revered for the food and medicine they offer in their countries of origin, and as herbalists we can enact a special kind of alchemy transforming these problematic pariahs into an abundant resource for health and wellbeing. As tenders of the wild, we help shape the ecology with the way we collect these plants, encourage and discourage their proliferation, and utilize their gifts. And by understanding the environmental implications of their presence within the landscape, we can bring our healing work to the shared earth body through native plant restoration efforts. Join herbalist and permaculture designer Lindsay Napolitano to explore a selection of invasive species from a pharmacological and ecological perspective, and dive into the chemical free methodology of mindful management and strategic harvest.
