FAQs

Does elderberry really “work”?

Elderberries contain a wide range of health promoting flavonoids including quercetin and anthocyanins, which are believed to account for the therapeutic effects in supporting cold and flu conditions. Research conducted in Denmark, shows that the berry extract increases the IFN-β inducing activity of L. acidophilus in dendritic cells, which suggests antiviral and immune-enhancing activity. In Israel, where researchers were studying elderberry extracts, it was determined that compounds in elderberry inhibit the activity of neuraminidase (an enzyme that breaks down healthy cell walls), and disarms the viral spikes that puncture cells by binding to them, thus preventing the flu virus from invading cells.

But perhaps the most compelling evidence that elderberry offers immune support, is its sustained presence in kitchen pantries and medicine cabinets for centuries, and its inclusion in medicine traditions from around the world for millennia.

Is elderberry safe for kids & pregnancy?

Elderberry has a long history of safe consumption by adults and children. When prepared properly, elderberries lose any toxicity they may have in raw form through the syrup making process. Our Fields Without Fences Elderberry Elixir is recommended for children over one year of age.

Why American elderberries?

We utilize berries that are hand harvested and frozen at peak ripeness for our Fields Without Fences Elderberry Elixir. Grown on our certified organic farm, and by other organic farmers in our coop, these berries never lose their potency through a drying process.

Most elderberry syrups on the market are made with dried berries shipped around the world from eastern Europe. They must be reconstituted with added water which dilutes the formula as vital nutrients are lost during the process. Our Elderberry Elixir has no additional water added or fillers, and supports organic American farmers, farming for a healthy planet.

Sambucus nigra canadensis is our native North American elderberry, and as a native perennial helps to restore ecosystems when incorporated into agricultural landscapes. Supporting products made with American elderberries can help to revive rural economies and communities, and encourage regenerative agriculture. Creating products with native elderberries provides a livelihood for farmers, and improves the health and integrity of our shared landscape.

What does it taste like?

Sweet and lightly spiced deliciousness. Our Elderberry Elixir is reminiscent of blackberry or blueberry when sweetened with wildflower honey, with delicate notes of cinnamon.

Why is your elderberry syrup a thinner consistency than another elderberry syrup I’ve had?

Other elderberry syrups on the market are loaded with extra sugar that thicken the formula. We use just enough honey to sweeten the pot and focus on pure elderberry magic with absolutely NO added water, fillers, or preservatives, keeping our formula super healthy and super delicious. Our blend is up to 10 times more concentrated than other brands available.

Can I pick up my order at the farm?

Yes! Simply select “farm pick up” at check out. Orders are available for pick up M-F, 8am-7pm. Pick up time must be specified via email to be fulfilled.
